Cataract Surgery and Care
What is a Cataract?
A cataract is not a growth or film. It is the clouding over of the focusing lens of the eye, which is located behind the pupil. As we age, cataracts, or clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye, can be a problem. The eye’s natural lens forms a white matter which blocks light rays from reaching the retina properly, and leads to such problems as:
•Blurred vision
•Light Sensitivity/Glare
•Color Distortion
•Halos around lights, difficulty seeing traffic lights
•Difficulty seeing street signs, and freeway exits
•Difficulty reading fine print
•Difficulty writing checks, reading bills, or filling out forms
Can I Stop Cataracts from Forming?
Once the focusing lens clouds, there is no way to make it clear again, nor any technique to slow or stop its progress. It steadily limits a person’s ability to do even simple things.
Cataract Surgery – What Should I Expect?
The physicians of EyeCare Associates of Texas, P.A. perform cataract surgery in an outpatient surgical facility with a team of skilled professionals.
The eye is numbed with topical anesthetics and you are extremely comfortable throughout the entire procedure. A small probe, known as a phacoemulsifier, gently removes the cataract. A tiny self-sealing incision allows for quick healing and rarely requires sutures. Once you are prepared for the procedure the actual surgery takes less than 20 minutes. Once the surgery is complete, additional drops are placed in your eye to decrease the risk of infection or inflammation. You will need to be seen at our Duncanville location the next day to check healing.
